I’m not a great fan of this photo, but as you can tell, it was busy and I was probably being pressured to get out of the way by someone. This is the main road going through Arashiyama. By far the best way to get to Arashiyama is by bike, park it for free and then trek around on foot through the bustling crowds.
Downtown Arashiyama is very much orientated towards tourists. Every time I went there I found that the most practical item I could find on offer was an assortment of ice creams. The others were all pointless trinkets that probably were manufactured in China and even though they were sold as traditional Japanese artifacts, held little connection to the society and culture of years past.
