I have travelled by many different modes of transport in my life, but to this day never by rickshaw. Although I wouldn’t say that it is one I particularly would want to travel by either, having travelled around SE Asia where they are major targets for petty theft and lazy, sweaty tourists.
I always thought that the rickshaw was invented in Japan, as they have their own word for it, 人力車 (meaning person, power, carriage) and Japan usually has a tendency to bastardise foreign words into their own language, meaning it would be something like リクショアー. However the apparent origins of the rickshaw seem to stem from the fabulous United States of America, even though it is far more prevalent in east asian society.
